Kaikoura, to me, means whales, seals and pelagic birds. It also means misty mountains, beautiful sunsets and seafood.
I’m planning two or three nights here. We loved it last time, even though it is a very small town in the middle of nowhere. The wildlife is fabulous and I’m thinking positively that the weather will be too!

My own photo from April. He looks small but he wasn’t!

Choices: whale watching, bird watching or dolphin, fur seal watching with a spot of fishing for your own dinner. There is also swimming with the dolphins, that sounds like fun. The prices range from $90 to $170. I want to do it all, it maybe the only time I get the chance but, there is the weather. again! Calm seas are essential 🙂

They swim low in the water, I was surprised when I saw the photos I took, even though they are mainly under water they still look huge.

There is a bachelor pad of male sperm whales that come here to feed upon the abundance of food which is found in the nutrient rich waters of the Kaikoura Canyon. The semi-resident sperm whales include Saddleback, Manu and Tiaki. Saddleback being given his name due to a patch found on his back that looks much like that of a saddle. Saddleback has been off the Kaikoura coast for over 20+ years. Kaikoura is also visited by many other migrating whales, like the humpback whales, pilot whales, blue whales and southern right whales?

At Dolphin Encounter you get the opportunity to swim with, or watch, the dusky dolphins in their natural environment off the coast. Dusky dolphins are resident in the coastal waters of Kaikoura all year round and are renowned for their acrobatic leaps and interactive behaviour. Tours operate up to 3 times daily all year round.

Adult Swimming     $170.00

Adult Watching         $90.00

“This was a great way to spend a couple of hours out on the ocean. Staff was friendly. After getting in your wetsuit there was a safety briefing. Then on the bus off to the boat. Took about 30 mins before we found the dolphins and we could get in the water. As the pod moved we followed them on the boat, having a total of 4 opportunities to get in the water with them. It was awesome seeing 100+ dolphins swimming and playing all around you. The wetsuits are very comfortable, keeping you warm and afloat.”

This would be amazing!

I can swim, too!

We did this last visit, it was so exciting and great value for money, I thought. It would be good to be able to do it again. Maybe . . . . . . . .
